Reviews for Hawks Cay Resort:

- “A week of paradise” from A TripAdvisor Member
“Just returned from a glorious week at Hawk’s Cay Resort. A few years ago we took a cruise and now our kids say that this resort was better than the cruise. There were five pools to choose from. There was a main pool right off the hotel, then there was the lagoon right behind it, with salt water that kept your afloat and tiki boats the …”

- “A GREAT RESORT” from RocketTom
“I am a travel agent and I have done lots of traveling and this place was paradise! They have a nice little beach/lagoon area with tiki huts to sit under, a dolphin encounter, live music, wedding gazebo (which was set up for a sunset wedding), charter boats, a kids pirate ship water park, gift shops, and much, much more. After reading all of the …”

- “Great family resort” from A TripAdvisor Member
“Hawk’s Cay is one of the most relaxing resorts north of Key West. Everything you need is right there on property, and the staff is extremely nice and accomodating. Familywise, it’s excellent, especially with the dolphin program…”

- “For Boaters or Families” from theresama40
“2BR/3 Bath Cottage with 2 lovely balconies right on the canal was very pleasant. We rented a boat one day and were able to dock in front of our unit. Lots of kids at the pools, which made them very popular with the kids in our family. Kids “pirate” pool and adjoining family pool very attractive — though construction noise and less than …”

- “First Class!” from A TripAdvisor Member
“Ignore the bad reviews, the resort is truly wonderful. Very clean, very warm and friendly people. The Kids’ Club is great, all 3 of my children enjoyed it. The pools are clean and never crowded since there are so many of them. The villas are impeccably clean. The restaurants have top quality food and service, and the family packages are …”

- “Grossest Resort (???) Ever” from ab5ster
“This place was advertised as a Resort. A resort from 1960 maybe. The hallway smelled like Mildew. There were kids everywhere and the rooms looked like college dorm rooms.. The adult pool was nice and the dolphin’s were cool to watch. Everything was overpriced and from the first moment we checked in to the moment we left we heard people …”

- “Huge resort” from A TripAdvisor Member
“Just returned from Hawk’s Cay. It’s a huge resort with very good facilities. Nice rooms, great pools, decent gym (small), tennis courts. We were there on a school vacation week so it was packed with kids. This is what we wanted. All in all we had a great trip. My complaints would be that it is so big and loud with steel drums and bad singers …”

- “You can do better” from A TripAdvisor Member
“This place is overrated. The entire place needs to be updated and it is not clean. The main thing it has going for it is the location. However, the pools are not particularly nice with the exception of the kids pool. You can do better in the Keys…”

- “Great for kids” from KidsinCalifornia
“We just returned from Hawk’s Cay after spending 7 days at the resort. The Indies “kid’s club” was under construction during our stay with some days being louder than others. The pirate ship water feature and the playset is excellent for the kids. Our only complaint was when we first checked in they did not have our reservation that we booked …”

Key West!
“Weather forecast: 77 degrees, party sunny

The ship was slowly making its way into Miami port when we woke up this morning. The Captain guided the ship all the way into the channel, did a 360 degree turn and pulled up to the dock next to the Carnival Imagination and RCL’s Majesty of the Seas. One last time at the buffet for breakfast, showers and final packing was first priority, then all we could do was sit and wait for the customs all clear signal. We chose the Express Walk-Off Disembarkation so when the announcement was given, we walked off the ship carrying our own luggage. Evidently several hundred passengers though this was a good idea too as the line snaked halfway down the ship, across the bow and halfway down the other side. Our cabin cards were swiped for the last time, customs officials checked passports and we headed outside to the curb to wait for the Alamo shuttle. The whole process went smoothly and quickly.

Final reflections on the cruiseline

NCL likes: Egg Beaters, Splenda, no formal clothes needed and no formal dining time

NCL dislikes: no food trays, salt & pepper packets used on the aft balcony dining area, no free daily newspaper

Alamo didn’t have much choice in the luxury car class available (there were 5 SUVs) so we chose a Toyota Avalon and received a discount on the rental. Luggage got stowed in the trunk, GPS fired up and we were on our way to Key West!

The drive down was nice but if there’s one road in the country that needs to be widened beyond 2 lanes, it’s definitely Highway 1! Stoplight after stoplight, fluctuating speed limit signs, vehicles out for a scenic drive moseying along just makes for a long drive. But the scenery was great and weather awesome.

We passed Key after Key after Key and finally made it to the end of the road mid-afternoon. We drove down Duval Street, past Hemingway’s House and found Papa’s Hideaway Bed & Breakfast tucked in a little dead-end street next to the Key West Naval Air Station Truman Annex. Fred, the owner, welcomed us, gave us a rundown of amenities and introduced us to Pookie, the beautiful long-haired resident cat. Our room was Studio #2 up the stairs and has the comforts of home in a little package. We have a private balcony with clothesline, wicker loveseat, 2 chairs and a table. Inside is a small bathroom with shower, closet, king bed, futon, TV and a kitchenette (half-sized refrigerator, sink, dishes, coffee maker, microwave and toaster oven.

The property is landscapped with palm trees, flowers and shrubs which certainly gives it a tropical feel and earns the name “hideaway”. Between the 2 cottages is a in-ground pool and hot tub. A nice continental breakfast is served poolside daily with selections of cereal, breads and pastries, oatmeal, coffee and juice.

We relaxed in the cool breezes of the balcony, unpacked, then ventured out for some dinner before turning in for the night.”

Key West – Key West, United States (usa flag pole mallory square, key west travel blogs)

Key West
“DAY 1 – We started the day in Florida City looking for cheap accomodation on the Keys. Everything was so expensive, in the range of $100 per night and upwards that we decided to go back to Walmart, buy a cheap tent and camp (although camp sites cost $40 per night!!). After buying a $20 tent we began our drive to Key West, with me as navigator. Luckily my job was made very easy as we basically just had to follow highway 1 south the whole way!

Driving over the Keys was fantastic, with the highway seeming as though it was ‘floating’ as we passed between each island. Our first stop was at a little ‘nook’ beach just off the highway on Key Marathon, where we had a packed lunch from our new cool box. For most of our lunch we had the little beach to ourselves and then a family arrived. Doog and I watched on silently as the little girl paddled into the water and then started to do a wee. At this point, any thoughts of going in the water myself vanished. The family all spoke Spanish – we thought we would be leaving that in South America but it seems as though many people have Spanish as their first languae in the US too, well in Florida at least!

We then got back in the car and drove on to Sombrero Beach at mile marker (MM) 50 (because there is only one main road, all landmarks or streets are marked by their distance from the most southerly point on Key West using mile markers). We got a little lost and ended up driving around some private roads first where there were some impressive houses on the bay front, each with expensive cars on their driveways and expensive yachts at their private moorings.

On entering Sombrero Beach there was a sign saying ‘Look out – Portuguese Man of War’, which put us slightly on edge, but the beach itself was stunning and so we spent a few hours relaxing, soaking up the sun and reading our books. It was also a great beach for people watching. Two gay guys set up camp next to us with their two chihuahuas. One of the guys was wearing very tight speedos with ‘Lifeguard’ written across his bottom. One of the dogs really like playing with his ball and every time it was thrown out into the sea it would swim after it and bring it back in his mouth, sounding like it was choking on every doggy paddle it swam.

This day was mother’s day, or as the American’s like to call it ‘mom’s day’ and there weere lots of families having BBQs and picnics on the beach. Just as we were about to leave, a woman wearing the strangest bikini I have ever seen came strolling past us. It was so tiny that it only just covered the bare minimum, with two teeny tiny triangles held together by thin string making up the top and possibly an even tinier triangle making up the bottom part. It caught everyone’s attention on the beach and everyone couldn’t help but stare at her.

After the beach we drove to Key West, crossing over the huge 7 mile bridge from Key Marathon. We checked into our $40 a night campsite, put up our 2 man Walmart tent and were pleasantly surprised by the size of it, you could fit another person in there easily! We then decided to drive into the centre of Key West and have a little look around. We found a car parking space in a road near the main pier and after 2 attempts Doogal successfully managed to reverse park into it only to find out from a woman who lived on the street that we could not park in that direction. We then noticed that all the cars were facing the same way on our side of the road and facing the opposite direction on the other side. We didn’t want to get a parking ticket for parking in the wrong direction, so Doogal turned around and did his reverse parking again — this time he managed it first time around.

We walked around the pier and looked at all the big boats there. There were lots of restaurants and bars lining the pier and everyone walking past us seemed to be holding a beer or some other drink, we decided to have one another night and so after looking in a few shops (run by overly tanned women …”

Wife going on vacation without me. Mother in law suprised her and her sister with the trip.?

My mother-in-law surprised the two with a trip to Key West just after Christmas. I am not mad at my wife, but fairly upset with my mother-in-law. Here are the reasons why….keep in mind the trip will cost her around $5000.

1. We just got married last August. She said she could only afford to give us $500.
2. The nicest thing she has ever gotten "us" as a gift is a meal at Applebee’s.
3. She didn’t ask my wife first so we could communicate about it. Whenever I want to go on a small trip my wife says we are a package deal and should do things together.
4. My wife an I agreed not to by each other gifts for Christmas and buy stuff together for the the house we just bought. Now my wife has to spend around $500 on food, entertainment, ect.
5. I was trying to plan a trip with my wife in March. That will not happen now.

Should her mom have considered her son in law in these plans? Or at least give us an opportunity to communicate about it? Let me know if my anger is unjust. Of course I am being selfish. I want to go to Key West in February, too.

I wouldn’t be mad at my MIL, I’d be mad at my wife if she accepted. Your wife could say "No, thank you," you know, or she could say, "I only want to go if my husband can come with me – like I’ve always said, we’re a package deal."
